Benedict "Ben" Birtalan, 81, of
Smiley St. Ellwood City died on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at
Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
Born October 6, 1927 in Ellwood City, he was the son of the late Balint
and Mary Toth Birtalan.
Mr Birtalan retired from US Steel where he worked in the Accounting
Dept. He then was employed
by the Department of Labor and Industry. At the time of his second
retirement, he was the
Supervisor for the Western Pa. Regional Tax Office. He was a member of
Holy Redeemer Parish.
Ben graduated from Lincoln High School and from Geneva College. He was a
founding member of
the former Shelby Male Chorus. A Veteran of the US Army, he served
during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Ellwood City. A former
Boy Scout Leader,
Ben was also a member of the Ellwood Wampum Rod and Gun Club. His
hobbies included;
hunting, fishing, camping and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Kaldy Birtalan, two
sons and a daughter in law;
Bradley D. Birtalan of Slippery Rock; David C. and Theresa Birtalan of
Keller, Texas, a daughter,
Laurie A. Birtalan of Harmony, a sister, Julia Lukes of Zelienople, a
brother, Bert Birtalan of
Chewton, and four grandchildren; Blake, Samantha, David and Andrea
Birtalan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 on Thursday, October 1 at
the Marshall Funeral Home
200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. The Knight of Columbus will have a
service at 8:30 P.M.
Blessing services will be held at the Marshall Funeral Home on Friday,
October 2, 2009 at 11:00
A.M. with Rev. Father Mark Thomas officiating. Military rites will be
offered by the Veterans
Honor Guard.
Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery.
