Charline E. (Bates) Boots died August
26, 2009 at Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care in New Wilmington, PA,
where she had lived since April 2007. Charline was born June 26, 1919 at
1012 Beckford St., New Castle, the second child of Manley R. and Ethel
(Palmer) Bates. She graduated from New Castle High School, where she
played cello in the school orchestra. She was Worthy Advisor of New
Castle Assembly #1 of the International Order of The Rainbow for Girls.
Along with other members of her family, she was active in the Third
United Presbyterian Church.
Following
graduation from New Castle Business School, she worked for Bell
Telephone Company, prior to her marriage to Chauncey W. Boots on August
7, 1943. After her marriage, she “moved to the country,” living in
Fombell for the next 35 years, where Chauncey was the Rural Letter
Carrier. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday School at Wurtemburg
United Methodist Church, where she was also active in United Methodist
Women. A life-long supporter of Christian missions, she served for a
time as an officer of the Butler District UMW. Charline was a member of
Pleasant Hill Grange #1505, and active in Riverside School parents’
groups, when her children were students. For many decades, she and
Chauncey enjoyed the monthly gatherings of the Sheer Luck Club.
After several years as a secretary in
the Riverside Beaver County School District, she worked as a bookkeeper
for Mid-Penn Refining, from which she retired. In retirement, Charline &
Chauncey continued to live in Fombell during the summer and at
Travelers’ Rest Resort, Dade City, Florida, during the winter. In
addition to golf, they participated in many musical groups. Charline
also participated in craft groups, particularly needlework and ceramics,
at TR.
In addition to her parents, aunts and
uncles, Charline was pre-deceased by her husband, Chauncey; brother,
Willis Bates; brothers-in-law, Albert & Paul Boots; sister-in-law, Olive
(Miller) Bates; son-in-law, Dr. Richard Herman; and infant
granddaughter, Erin Boots. She is survived by her children, Wesley
(Rosalie) of Uniontown, PA, Patty Herman of Bethlehem, PA, Bob (Patty)
of Fombell, and Cheryl (Bruce Weston) of Marblehead, MA; brothers,
Raymond (Olive) Bates of Peoria, AZ, and Donald (Nancy) Bates of Forest
Hill, MD; brothers-in law, Lloyd (Jean) Boots of Vancouver, WA and Jerry
(Carolyn) Boots of The Woodlands, TX; sisters-in-law, Jane Bates of New
Castle, Norma Boots of Fombell and Doris Boots of Portersville;
grandchildren, Richard W. Herman of Arlington, VA, Peter (Janine Calabro)
Herman and J. Lucas Herman of New York City, Kathryn E. Herman of
Souderton, PA (and fiancé, Ben Lamberton, Hanover, PA), Charles W.
(Carrie) Boots of Greensburg, PA, Timothy J. (Emily) Boots of
Pittsburgh, Amy Boots of Nago, Japan, Garrett Boots of Fombell, PA,
Sarah Weston of Marblehead, MA, David (Bonita) Weston of Columbia, MO,
Laura Weston (Michael Gunn) of Sacramento, CA, Krista Michael (Chris
Cramer) of Las Cruces, NM, and Doren (Paula) Michael of Uniontown, PA;
great-grandchildren, Hannah DeGregorio of Marblehead, MA, Franziska,
Samuel, Isaac, and Glorya Weston of Columbia, MO, Christian and Isaac
Cramer of Las Cruces, NM, Abby and Elijah Gilbert, of Greensburg, PA;
and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive visitors at
Marshall Funeral Home, Fountain Ave., Ellwood City, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM,
September 4, 2009, and one-half hour before the 10:30 AM service at
Wurtemburg United Methodist Church, September 5, with Revs. Thomas Topar
and S. Bruce Mould officiating. Interment will be at North Sewickley
Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family
