Verna
Jean Smith, 89, formerly of Orchard Ave. Ellwood City, PA died on
Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Northview Estates.
Born May 23, 1920 in Ellwood City, she was the daughter of the late
Floyd and Carrie Nicklas Barto. She was married to the late William D.
Smith who died in 1999.
Verna was an active member of Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church, where
she was an elder, former Sunday School Teacher and youth leader. She was
also a member of the King's Daughters Class, the Lena Lash Guild, the
Monday Morning Prayer Group and the former chairman and secretary of the
Continuing Memorial Committee at the church. Mrs. Smith graduated from
Lincoln High School in 1938. She previously worked at JC Penney's in
Ellwood City for 9 years.
Survivors include two sons; David W. Smith of Reno, Nevada, Keith E.
Smith of Washington, Pa., sister in law, Helen Barto of Ellwood City,
three grandchildren; Mark Smith, Shelley Smith Getic, Edward Smith and
three great grandchildren; Dustin and Stephanie Smith and Casey Getic.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Barto and a sister, Mary
Fisher.
Visiting hours will be held from 9 to 11 A.M. Saturday, November 21,
2009 at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City.
Funeral Services will be held immediately following the visitation.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Bell Memorial Church Memorial
Fund.
