Ruth Oberfeitinger

Ruth Alma Oberfeitinger, 97, of Ellwood City passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Northview Estates.

Born May 19, 1922 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late LaRue and Bertha Murray Gortner. She was married to Howard Oberfeitinger for 51 years when he passed away in 1998.

Mrs. Oberfeitinger began her teaching career in the East McKeesport Schools and retired from the Ellwood City Area Schools in November of 1984 as a First Grade Teacher at Hartman Elementary. Ruth was an active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter # 212, Order of Eastern Star Past Matrons, Pi Omicron National Sorority, Wimodausis Club, Ellwood City Women’s Club and the Ellwood City Art Club. Ruth and her husband enjoyed traveling during summer vacations and after retirement. Over the years, she enjoyed her violin, piano, and organ music as well as her art and craft classes. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing her books.

Survivors include a daughter Gayle Campbell and her husband, Robert of Sunbury, PA; son, Dr. James Oberfeitinger and his wife, Scarlet of Ellwood City; sister, Lois Easton of Montrose, Colorado; 3 grandchildren, Gretchen Oberfeitinger, Hannah Hogue, and James Oberfeitinger; one great grandchild, Braxton; and eight nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Cook.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday June 8 from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 at Calvin Presbyterian Church. Her pastor, Rev. Sean Brubaker will officiate. The Eastern Star members will have a service at 11. Interment will follow in the Muncy Cemetery in Muncy, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Marshall Funeral Home, Ellwood City.

The family would like to express their special thanks to both the Northview Estates and Kindred Hospice staff for the kind and compassionate care shown to Ruth.
