Clarence Edward (Ed) Wallace

Clarence Edward (Ed) Wallace was born in Star Junction, Pennsylvania, May 27, 1920, to Clarence L. and Hazel (Upperman) Wallace. Shortly after his birth his family moved to 432 Hazel Avenue in Ellwood City. Ed was the oldest of four children, two sisters, Bessie (Julius Laszlo) and Lela (John Flannagan) and a brother, Norman. He attended North Side Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937. Throughout his adult life he worked as a Machinist. He served as a Machinist Apprentice at the Ellwood City Tube Mill following high school graduation. In 1939, Ed married his sweetheart, Mildred McQuiston. His first two children, Lana Louise and Ronald Edward were born before Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served at the U.S. Personnel Separation Center, New York, and later in Bangor, Maine. Following his discharge in 1946, he and Millie purchased a small farm on the Old Pittsburgh Road, in Wayne Township, where he lived until 2006. Together they raised seven children, Lana (Mrs. Harvey Jewett) of San Diego, CA: Ronald of Wampum, PA: Dennis (Nancy) of Ellwood City, PA: David (Yvonne) of South Carolina: Deborah (Mrs. Paul Porrazzo) of Mesa, AZ: Martha Gavroy of Glendale, AZ: and Thomas (Cathy) of Ellwood City, PA. Ed was blessed with ten grandchildren, Ronald Jr. and Michael Wallace, Mollie and Elizabeth Wallace, Jeffrey Wallace, Stefan Montgomery, Joshua Gavroy, Christopher and Grace Porrazzo and Lindsey Wallace and four great grandchildren, Max and Zoe Montgomery, Hannah and Dillon Wallace.

In December 1974, Milled died of advanced breast cancer. Ed struggled to raise the two youngest children, Martha and Thomas, who remained at home., His sister, Bessie Laszlo assisted him in every way she could.

In April 1981, Ed married June Browning of Sharon, PA. With retirement and children grown and gone, he and June enjoyed traveling, especially trips to California and winters in Florida. June died from Parkinson's disease on October 11, 2002.

In addition to his wives, Millie and June, Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence L. and Hazel Wallace, his brother Norman Wallace and his sisters, Mrs. Lela Flannigan and Mrs. Bessie Laszlo.

Throughout his adult life, Ed was a machinist, first working for National Tube in 1940-1941, United Engineering and Foundry Company 1943-1954, Ellwood City Forge Company, 1954-1956, Mesta Machine Company, 1956-1970. He was superintendent and shop supervisor at Mesta between 1967 and 1970. He loved his work and he loved woodworking, building exquisite grandfather clocks for himself and for each of his children. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and raising walnut trees from seedlings. Ed was a member of the Freemasons and the Wayne Township Fire Department. He belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church counsel.

Ed moved to Northview Estates in Ellwood City in 2005, when taking care of a big house and yard became too much for him. There he made new friends and enjoyed the care of the capable staff. He continued to enjoying traveling, visiting his daughters in Arizona and California.

Following a stroke in 2007, Ed moved to Jamison Care Center in New Castle. There he celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends on May 27, 2010. His health continued to decline and passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2011.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, July 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at 10:00 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Peggy Suhr-Barkley and his granddaughter, Rev. Elizabeth Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in Slippery Rock Cemetery.

I live in San Diego, CA now, but I recognized Mr. Wallace from Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a strong, quiet man who accomplished many things for our church. My parents Karl and Ellamae Fleischer were probably friends with Mr. Wallace, so he resonates with me. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Both of my parents are gone, and I have found that it is never easy to accept that we will not see them any more, but I find some comfort that they are not suffering or in pain any longer. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grief.

Suzanne Fleischer, San Diego, CA
