Louis J. Ferrante


Louis J. Ferrante, 74, of Main St. Wampum, PA died on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Kindred Hospital, Heritage Valley Beaver following an extended illness.

A lifelong resident of Wampum, he was born on August 18, 1936, the son of the late James L. and Elizabeth "Betty" Beatrice Ferrante He was married for 38 years to the late Eleanor A. LaMont Ferrante who passed away on January 2, 1996.

He began his career working with his father in Ferrante's General Store in Wampum. He was formerly employed at the Wampum Post Office as a rural mail carrier. Since 1956, Lou was the owner and operator of Ferrante Upholstering and Carpeting. He was actively involved with the success of Holiday Magic Cosmetics. Lou graduated from Wampum High School in 1954, attended Duquesne University and the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State. He was a long time active member, membership chairman, and past president of the Wampum Area Lions Club. He formerly served as the Lions Deputy District Govenor. He was instrumental in starting the annual Wampum Easter Egg Hunt with the help of the Lions Club. He was a member of the F & AM Lodge # 599 in Ellwood City, New Castle Consistory, and the Syria Shrine. Lou was member of the Queen of Heaven Church, the SOI, the Elks and Moose Lodge in Ellwood City. He also was an Eagle Scout.

Lou loved, promoted, and served his hometown in many ways, He was the founding member and past president of the Wampum Historical Society and the Wampum Area Business Association. Lou was chairman of the Wampum Bicentenial Celebration in 1996, chairman of the Wampum Homecoming Committee, and he started the concerts in the park and concerts in the gazebo. He enjoyed music and was well know locally as a jazz drummer. He was a member of both the Beaver and Lawrence County Musicians Union and received the Henry N. Mancini Award in 2004.

Survivors include two sons, James L. (Michaelyn) Ferrante of Wampum, Jonathan L. Ferrante of Boca Raton, FL, a daughter, Tina M. (Patrick) Livingston of Salt Lake City, UT, sister, Beverly (Woody) Hazen of Ellwood City, three grandchildren, Lexie, Austin and Jon Ferrante, a niece and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 on Saturday, January 29, 2011, and 2-4 and 7-9 on Sunday at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main St. Wampum.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Queen of Heaven Church on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
