Velma Noel


Velma Noel, 90, formerly of Ellwood City and Brookville, PA died on Monday, November 28, 2011 at the St. John's Lutheran Care Center in Mars following an extended illness.

Born December 23, 1920 in Ellwood City, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Dorothy Forbush Houk .

She was married for 35 years to George B. Noel when he passed away on March 17, 1976.

Mrs. Noel graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. She was a member of the First Baptist Church's in Ellwood City and Brookville. She retired following 23 years of service as a teacher's aide in the Brookville Area Schools. She was a volunteer at the Salvation Army, the Brookville Food Pantry and at the Memorial Home in Brookville.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Carolyn Grundy of Ellwood City, Linda Carter of Ardmore, AL, Janet (Gayland) Cook of Pittsburgh; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

She is the sister of James Houk, LeRoy Houk and Betty Crawford of Ellwood City and Clarence Houk of Ohio.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two of her sons in law, William Grundy and Ronald Carter as well as her three sisters, Doris Crawford, Catherine Cable and Janice Nolan.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday November 30, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. Friends will also be received at the funeral home from 9:30 until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 1, 2011. Rev. Rob Guy will officiate.

Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the St. John's Lutheran Specialty Care Center, 500 Wittenberg Way, Box 928 Mars, PA 16046.

We have very fond memories of Mrs. Noel over the years we knew her....from supporting her cheerleading daughters to her work with the children at Brookville High School.
