William R. Betz Sr.


William R. Betz Sr., 87, of Chewton died on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at UPMC Passavant Hospital following a six month illness.

Born January 23, 1924 in Wilmerding, PA, he was the son of the late Bartholomew T. and Angela Galmartin Betz.

He was married for 51 years to Ethel Marie Rhodes Betz who passed away on February 22, 2004.

Mr. Betz retired from the US Postal System where he was a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He was a member, longtime usher, and served on the Parish Council of Queen of Heaven Church. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirate Fan. Bill cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include 3 sons - William (Rosina) Betz Jr. of Chewton, Father Tom Betz O.F.M. Cap of Philadelphia, Ray (Teresa) Betz of Plymouth, MI; 2 daughters - Cathy (Chris) Hardie of Ellwood City, PA, Patty (David) Berger of Chewton; sister in law - Marie Betz of Zelienople; 9 grandchildren - Danielle and Ryan Betz, Jason and Jessica Hardy, Angela, Eric, Alicia Berger, and Mariah and Derek Betz: 2 great grandchildren - Tyler and Alexander Berger

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Joseph Betz.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday July 12, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 7-9 at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2001 at Holy Redeemer Church at 10:00 am.

Interment will follow in the Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Holy Redeemer School 311 Lawrence Ave. Ellwood City, PA 16117.

I just found out that we lost Bill on Sunday. I send my sincerest sympathy for your loss. Like Angela, Bart, Joe and Ethel he was such a good person. Surely God has prepared a high place for him in Heaven with all our other loved family members who are there.
